Spay and Neuter
Always spay and neuter your pets. If you can’t afford it, there is help out there. Just ask!
Feliway
Does your cat have a huge tantrum when it’s time for a trip to the vet?
Feliway will save the day! Spray a towel with Feliway and place it in the cat’s carrier. Feliway can be purchased at Petsmart, Tomlinson’s or other reliable dealers. It produces a calming effect and can be used for cats that urinate outside the box as well. It takes 10 to 15 minutes for the calming effect to set in, but it’s good for the ride to the vet and will last through the whole vet exam.
Dog Socializing
All dogs need to be socialized as much as possible. Go on dog walks with other people or to dog parks with your dog.
If you are not sure how to do this properly, ask a professional to help.
Smells Like Home
When leaving your pet at a veterinary hospital, bring something like a towel, blanket, your old clothing, or a favorite toy to soothe the fear about being in a strange place. If your pet is there for a while, bring an extra bag of their own home-smelling products so that the kennel person can replace those items that get dirty after a few days with another batch of home-smelling products.
ID Tags
Keep collars with ID tags on your dogs at all times, even for those that never run off, just in case something
out of the ordinary happens.
Use a Carrier
Never carry your cat in your arms to a vet or where they are exposed to an unfamiliar part of town. Always use a carrier. The chances of them being frightened are so big that I can’t tell you how many times I have seen people lose their cats because the walk to the clinic was just a short way.
